I am a small preservation breeder of biewer terriers located on the Monterey Peninsula. I was introduced to the breed a several years ago when I was looking for a yorkie. I’ve always had a soft spot for the parti coloring, the yorkie size, and a silk drop coat; naturally, this fun-loving breed won me over. Biewers are, in my opinion, a little softer in temperament than their Yorkshire Terrier cousins, but still full of terrier spirit…hence the kennel name Sugar & Spice.
When my foundation bitch came to me, the breed was not yet fully recognized by AKC, but I began dabbling in conformation competitions through Foundation Stock Service. It didn’t take long for me to become addicted to the fancy. My girls all live with me in my home; before they are used in my breeding program, they have completed rigorous health testing and typically they have earned an AKC Championship (CH) in the conformation ring.
There is no one-size fits all when it comes to goals, as each of my dogs has different interests and personalities. Earning Canine Good Citizen (CGC) titles is a way to demonstrate temperament, some of my dogs have earned this title, yet, others will be testing in the near future. AKC has recently added some new titles such as Temperament Testing (ATT) and Farm Dog Certification (FDC) — these tests essentially validate the CGC skills in a different environment.
Outside of conformation, we are beginning to dabble in the performance sports to see what dog enjoys what sport. Fast Cat, essentially a 100-yard dash after a lure, was new venture that a few of the dogs loved in 2022. In 2024 we are training for Barn Hunt, where they get to put their natural terrier noses to work and dabbling in rally.
I take great pride in improving the breed with selective pairings. I breed a couple of litters each year, always looking for the best offspring to potentially be a future champion in my home. The rest of my puppies are placed in loving pet homes.
On occasion I will consider a show home. If you are interested in learning more about future litters of biewer terriers, please shoot me an email so we can schedule a time to talk live and get to know each other..
